Blast from the Past

Today was like one of those dreams where you go back through childhood memories and feel all the same emotions the way they were before. Even looking back on this day feels like recollecting distant memories from a dream, although this time it was different, this time it was real.

It has been four years since Callista and I lived in London, and today we went back to many of the places we used to visit often. We started out our day walking by St. Mary's Hospital, and saw door where all the royal babies make their first entrance to the public. Then we took a nice stroll down Paddington Basin, a canal behind Paddington station where may canal boats dock. This whole area we walked around this morning felt very nostalgic, since we used to live near Paddington station and walked around the area often.

After that, we walked from Paddington Basin to Hyde Park to take a walk trough the Italian Gardens before heading for lunch. On the way to Hyde Park, we got the opportunity to stop by the apartment where my family used to live. It almost felt unreal to be walking along the same sidewalks from four years ago, and how so many things have changed in our lives, however the roads and buildings seemed to have remained the way they used to be as if time had stood still.

After our walk in Hyde Park, we went inside Paddington station to have lunch, and afterwards we took a short walk to ICS (International Community School (where Callista and I went to school when we lived here)). ICS, similar to Post Oak, is an IB school and has many similarities such as the extended essay, TOK class, and community service. When we got to the school, we got to meet up with the DP1 (grade 11) class who gave us a presentation on their school, and then some of our group gave a presentation of Post Oak. Then, we got a tour of the school guided by the students, and sat in on a Literature class. We got to compare and contrast on how other IB schools work.It was awesome getting to go back to a place I used to go so often and see many familiar faces. Its amazing how many things have changes and yet many others stayed the same.

Then, we had dinner at Ivy Market Grill, and Callista and I met up with an old friend while we were at the restaurant. To wrap up our day, we all went to St. Martins Theatre and watched the longest running play in the world, The Mousetrap, a murder mystery by Agatha Christie.

Today felt like one of those dreams where you go back in time and search deeply though the places which once were taken for granted but are now held sacred. Except it was not a dream this time. This was real. We were there. Today was a dream come true.

Day 3 :: Written Blog - 7.5 miles (on foot)

Our day started off by paying a visit to the royal family's palaces. We walked by Buckingham Palace. Before we got there we learned a little bit about it, the most useful fact for the visit was about the flags. There are two flags flying at Buckingham Palace, the Union Jack and the Royal Family's flag. When the Union Jack flies above the palace that means that the queen is not in the building. If the Royal Family's flag is flying then she is in Buckingham Palace. Luckily the queen was in. We did not get to see her but we all talked about where she might be in this huge building. The gates are crowded with people and armed soldiers guarding the gates. (We suspect she chooses to stay in the back rooms.) During our visit to Buckingham Palace we also visited the Queen's Gallery. There were two available exhibits, one focusing on the Russian Royalty and the other focusing on The Shadow of War. The Russian Royalty exhibit had many beautiful paintings, artifacts, and sculp...

Final Reflection - Morgann

I have dreamed about going to London for so long. I have listened to my family members talk about what their life was like when they lived there. Mainly they talked about walking everywhere, patting down dresses for bombs, dreary weather, smoking, pubs, and being near other relatives. However, I never got to know what the city was actually like. I was shocked by how everything was so close together and how efficient the public transportation system was. When I got home I probably talked about the tube for a solid 30 minutes. I never really mastered the tube map but I did enjoy trying to learn it. Using the public transport was great because it allowed us to see the everyday commute. In the afternoons all the busses and tubes get very stuffed with people, imagine a sardine can, but double the amount of sardines in the can. We also walked a tone, members with fitbits told use that we often walked six to seven miles on average. I have never felt healthier than during the trip due to more...

Day 2 :: Written Blog - Exhausted but Excited

After spending roughly six hours at school, a couple of hours at the airport, eight hours on the flight and twelve hours in the city itself, I am finally bringing to you the first blog installment in which we are located in our target destination: London, England. Today's London adventures weren't really adventures in the traditional sense. Rather, they generally comprised of grocery shopping at UK chain Sainsbury's and settling-in to our apartment living situation. We did spend around an hour at Shakespeare's Globe Theater; seeing it recreated after 420 years so faithfully with the stereotypical cloudy English sky truly blasted me to the past, and all of the anecdotes and stories of the rowdy and raucous crowd heavily contrasts with the polite and kind people we have encountered so far. We additionally spent an hour at the Tate Modern museum of art, which showcases works not only from the UK, but around the world, with such famous names as Picasso, Matisse, Mondrian,...
