Today we spend time outside of London, and left the apartments at seven thirty in the morning to be driven via charter bus to Salisbury Cathedral. On the way, we witnessed breathtaking scenic views of the English countryside, and also got to drive through the historic city of Salisbury. When we arrived at the cathedral, we were able to view the tallest spire in the United Kingdom, many intricate architectural features designed by Christopher Wren, many stained glass windows, and most significantly, one out of four existing copies of the Magna Carta. Also, our tour guide showed us that four feet of water lies beneath the foundation by dipping a wooden rod into the ground after lifting a stone from the cathedral floor. Following this, we drove to Stonehenge (one of the wonders of the world) where were greeted by hundreds of sheep, and then walked around the perimeter of the monument. We learned that the monument was constructed around 3000 BC by the Neolithic people with sarsen-stones and blue-stones which weighed twenty five tons at most. The stones were positioned in a way which allowed people to track the movements of the sun; it was also used for worshiping purposes. After viewing the monument, we spent time inside the museum nearby where we got to go inside recreated versions of huts that the builders were likely to have lived in. After this, we drove to Windsor Castle (the Queen's countryside home) where we were surprised by the rare opportunity to to witness the raising of the royal family's flag, and were told by a tour guide that the Queen had just entered the private wing of the castle by helicopter. After partially getting over the excitement of being on the same grounds of the Queen, we spent time inside St. George's Cathedral and the state apartments. Every single room was beautifully decorated with features including gold trim, detailed paintings, chandeliers, tapestries, crests, and detailed architecture. Overall, we had an amazing time getting, and had the magical opportunity to experience landmarks which define history.
